"CED 2022" - Chief Executive Directors of European Capitals (6 may 2022)
The Secretaries General and Executive Directors of the European Union capitals, as part of their meeting "CED 2022" - Chief Executive Directors of European Capitals - under the theme "Solutions for the city of the future", visited NOVA Cidade Urban Analytics Lab of NOVA IMS.
During the visit they had the opportunity to know the projects and initiatives developed by NOVA Cidade in the areas of Urban and Territorial Intelligence, with emphasis on: UCD Lab project, i-territory, Data to the Lisbon Service and C-TECH.
“Urban Analytics Deep Dive Workshop” (9 to 11 february 2022)
Portugal Smart Cities Summit by Fundação AIP (18.11.2021)
Pre-presentation, at the Portugal Smart City Summit, of the results produced in the project where analytical approaches (descriptive, predictive and prescriptive) were adopted to respond to the major challenges of cities (emergency, waste, pollution, soft mobility and parking) in order to contribute to the planning and management of data-driven urban spaces.
Presentation made in the context of the meetings organized in the CML stand.
VI Conference of Regional and Urban Planning & I Conference in Data Science for Social (25 – 26 November 2021)
The main goal of these conferences was to gather different and multidisciplinary perspectives about the territory as well mobilize national and international research networks that have been working in this field of knowledge. During these conferences it was presented the use case #5 Emergency in the framework of the project Urban Co-Creation Data Lab under the title “Prediction and simulation of the risk of traffic accidents using neural networks and gradient boosting with an hybrid classification/regression modelling approach in urban context”. For the development of this use case were trained and tested neural networks and decision-trees alghoritms using an hybrid classification/regression approach, that allowed to predict and compute the risk of traffic accidents in the city of Lisbon at road segment level, resorting to historical data of traffic accidents from 2013 to 2020.
Innovation Dive: Urban Lab X Innovation&Analytics Lab Urban
Urban Lab and Innovation&Analytics Lab merged forces to find and develop the most disruptive innovations around five challenges:
- Mobility,
- Waste Management,
- Parking,
- Pollution, and
- Emergency.
The Innovation Deep Dive will be divided in three parts:
(1) Student Challenge,
(2) Research for Empathy, and
(3) Open Innovation Co-Creation,
all steps based on Design Thinking methodology.
Design thinking is a non-linear, iterative process that teams use to understand users, challenge assumptions, redefine problems and create innovative solutions to prototype and test. It involves three phases Inspiration, Ideation and Prototyping.
In the Student Open Challenge, the students of NOVA IMS, divided in seven groups, will choose one of the five challenges and apply Design Thinking methodology to define disruptive projects. This part will happen between September 27th and October 24th.
The Research for Empathy will be performed by researchers from both Labs, using netnography and in-depth interviews conducted between October 11st and November 1st. The goal is to identify insights to guide the ideation and prototyping phases.
The Open Innovation Co-Creation is composed of a three days workshop, where the participants will explore Lisbon in the search for insights (December 15th), Empathize (December with users and citizens need, and Brainstorm possible solutions for each persona (December 17th).
5th International Conference “Urban e-Planning”
VIRTUAL / ONLINE CONFERENCE - 2021
INSTITUTE OF GEOGRAPHY AND SPATIAL PLANNING, UNIVERSITY OF LISBON

The conference will focus on two main themes:
- Governance and Planning of Smart Cities,
- Citizens e-Participation in Urban Planning.
This conference is organized by the Urban e-Planning Research Network (UEP-NET) and promoted by the International Journal of E-Planning Research magazine, in collaboration with the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (Universidade de Lisboa).
An Abstract regarding UCD Lab #3 – Parking, was accepted and the results will be presented at the e-Planning Conference.
The Program Schedule will be available here in early July 2021.

Workshop Spatial Data Analysis - World Data League
Workshop - GIS concepts and spatial data analysis for data scientists (5th April) by Pedro Sarmento
Workshop title: Geographic Information Systems concepts and spatial data analysis for data scientists
Workshop description: In this workshop is intended to fill the gap in the use of spatial data by data scientists. The workshop will cover the main concepts of Geographic Information Systems & Science essential to understand spatial data and how to integrate and analyze it in data science projects. Types and characteristics of spatial data and essential geoprocessing operations will be highlighted in the workshop. Also, a demonstration of a 15-minute city study will be showcased, to demonstrate some of the concepts lectured in the workshop.
